ROCHESTER LABOR COUNCIL HOSTS ANNUAL AWARDS DINNER

Rochester, N.Y. -- On December 9, the Rochester Labor Council, AFL-CIO held its annual awards dinner at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. More than 250 guests packed the Highland ballroom. Every year, the RLC honors members of the local labor community who go above and beyond the call of duty.

 CSEA Local 828 won the best float category for the 25th annual Rochester Labor Day Parade that was held on September 6.  Bess Watts, Monroe County Local 828 president and president of the Rochester and Finger Lakes Chapter of Pride At Work, AFL-CIO, was nominated in two categories this year.  Ove Overmyer was honored for his outstanding achievement in political action for 2010.

Volunteers played a critical role in the success of this year's event.  They include:  Emily Vick (Workers United and Next Generation United), (IUE-CWA), Rose Reifer (Workers United), Michelle Hundley, Julie Garrett (IUE-CWA 81381), Anne Ticher (Pride at Work), Ronieka Burns (1199SEIU), April Franklin (1199SEIU), Ginny Baggs (IUE-CWA 81381) and Michelle Alaimo (IUE-CWA 81381).

This year’s award recipients are:

Lifetime Achievement
Awarded to an individual in recognition of a lifetime of service and dedication to the labor movement.

2010: Mike Harren, Chamberlain D’Amanda

Working Families Advocate of the Year
Awarded to an individual who has exceeded expectations publicly advocating the needs of working men and women during the past year.

2010: Susan John, NYS Assemblyperson

Mother Jones Award for Sacrifice Above and Beyond
Awarded to an individual who has given, sacrificed and/or donated their time to advance the causes of working men and women.

2010: Mike Leberth, RWDSU Local 220

Outstanding Achievement in Political Action
Awarded to an individual, or individuals, who have displayed a strong commitment to the AFL-CIO’s activism for issues and/or endorsed candidates.

Awarded to an individual leader from a coalition partner working with the labor movement.

2010: Rev. George Nicholas, Grace United Methodist Church

Jon Garlock Labor Educator of the Year
Awarded to an individual dedicated to teaching union members about the larger labor movement.

2010: Rosemarie McKinney, United Way

Apprentice Organizer of the Year
Awarded to an intern, volunteer or apprentice who has shown strong dedication to the labor movement.

2010: Julie Garrett, IUE-CWA 81381/NGU

Rose Carmody Awards for Perfect Attendance
Representing those who have attended all RLC Delegates meetings for the current calendar year.
