ROCHESTER LABOR STANDS TOGETHER TO PUSH FOR IMMEDIATE PASSAGE OF MARRIAGE EQUALITY LEGISLATION
Rochester, N.Y.-- On Thursday, June 9th at 12:00 pm, at NYSUT headquarters, Rochester's key labor leaders will host a press conference to urge State legislators to pass marriage equality legislation by the end of the legislative session on June 20th.
Leadership from organized labor including the Pride at Work, Rochester Finger Lakes Chapter; Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA-AFSCME 1000), New York State Public Employees Federation (SEIU/AFT); International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF); Workers United; New York State United Teachers; Rochester Police Locust Club; and American Postal Workers Union (APWU) will stand together with one voice, representing millions of working New Yorkers, in strong support for the freedom to marry for all loving and committed couples.
Jim Bertolone, president of the Rochester & Genesee Valley Area Labor Federation, AFL-CIO, says, “Coalitions have formed throughout New York State, opinion polls are overwhelmingly supportive, and lawmakers are beginning to see the light. Marriage Equality is a civil right, a moral right, and an ethical right. On Thursday we will stand together, as labor, to voice collectively, our call to action.”
