Rochester, N.Y.--  Harry Bronson was sworn in today as the New York State Assembly member representing the 131st District.

“This is an incredible opportunity and an honor to serve the families of the 131st Assembly District,” Bronson said, after taking the oath in the Monroe County Legislature chambers.

“My parents taught me at an early age the importance of public service, and today I take another step in my journey in serving my community,” he said.

On Wednesday, Bronson will attend Governor Andrew Cuomo’s State of the State speech in Albany.

About 175 people attended the ceremony where Bronson was sworn in by Rochester City Court Judge Jack E. Elliott. Bronson’s sister, Joyce Davis held a copy of his late mother's Bible for him.

In a short speech, Bronson vowed to work on addressing the state’s fiscal problems without abandoning the middle class and less fortunate citizens.  Bronson thanked many people, including Rochester Labor Council, AFL-CIO president Jim Bertolone who made brief remarks before Bronson took his oath.

“Harry is the right person at the right time to work with others who are truly committed to reform New York state government,” said Monroe County Election Commissioner Thomas F. Ferrarese, who served as master of ceremonies at the event.

“Harry has been a tenacious leader. He’s a great orator, a great statesman, and a great leader,” said Ted O’Brien, of Irondequoit, who is taking over Bronson’s old position as Democratic minority leader in the Monroe County Legislature.

Bronson, a lawyer, small business owner and former Monroe County legislator, was elected in November to replace Susan John, who did not seek re-election.  Bronson was enthusiastically endorsed by CSEA and the Rochester labor community.

Harry Bronson was elected to the Monroe County Legislature in 2005 and served as its minority leader since 2007. In a few days, the legislature will be making an announcement about Bronson's replacement for the 24th Legislative District.  In early December, Democrats in the city's 24th Legislative District committee picked Josh Bauroth - an Upper Monroe neighborhood leader - to replace Harry Bronson in the County Legislature.  Bauroth will most likely be approved by the entire legislature later this month.

The 131st state Assembly District includes working families who reside in Wheatland, Rush, Riga, Chili, Churchville, Scottsville and a large portion of the City of Rochester.
