Cuomo announces prison closures

On Thursday June 30, Governor Cuomo announced the closure of seven state correctional facilities. The closures will eliminate 3,800 prison beds and the action is expected to save $72 million this year and $112 million for the next state fiscal year.

The closures are:

Buffalo Work Release (Erie County)

Oneida (Oneida County)

Camp Georgetown (Madison County)

Summit Shock (Schoharie County)

Mid-Orange (Orange County)

Fulton Work Release (Bronx County)

Arthur Kill (Richmond County)

Assemblyman Hoyt resigns; six other vacancies exist

Assemblyman Sam Hoyt (D-Buffalo) resigned Wednesday to become Senior Vice President for Regional Economic Development at the Empire State Development Corporation.

Including this resignation, the State Assembly currently has six vacancies. The Governor has yet to call elections to fill these seats. The other vacancies are:

Assembly District 23 - Audrey Pheffer (D-Queens) – Became Queens County Clerk

Assembly District 27 - Nettie Mayersohn (D-Queens) – Retired

Assembly District 54 - Darryl Town (D-Brooklyn) – Joined Cuomo Administration

Assembly District 73 - Jonathan Bing (D-Manhattan) – Joined Cuomo Administration

Assembly District 116 – RoAnn Destito (D-Rome) – Joined Cuomo Administration

Furthermore, the seat of former NY Congressman Anthony Weiner (D) is currently vacant as well.
